The ZZ Plant, short for Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a striking and resilient tropical perennial native to Eastern Africa. Known by several names—Zanzibar Gem, Zuzu Plant, Aroid Palm, Eternity Plant, or Emerald Palm—it’s cherished for its glossy green leaves, low-maintenance nature, and adaptability. The ZZ Plant thrives in low to bright indirect light and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginners or those with a so-called “black thumb.” It typically grows 2–3 feet tall indoors, occasionally reaching up to 5 feet. Outdoors, it can survive in USDA Zones 10 and up. It blooms rarely indoors, producing a yellow-bronze spadix flower in late summer or fall, similar to other aroid plants. Grown from potato-like underground rhizomes, the ZZ Plant also offers air-purifying benefits and may reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve productivity. For best results, use well-draining soil in a pot with drainage holes or add gravel to prevent root rot. Avoid overwatering and direct sunlight. Though stunning and tough, it's important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by children or pets.
